Playlunch Announe Sophomore LP + Share New Single “Keith”.
Controversy? Threatened lawsuits? Hotlines, hot button subjects and a white hot video featuring a certain notorious hot tempered AFL Hall of Famer? Oh yes, Playlunch are back, with their latest single ‘Keith’ and a raucous new album to boot!
Following from the viral hit ‘Boys’, a scathing commentary on boorish male culture in the disguise of an irresistibly slinky 70’s disco pop romper stomper, “Keith” once again subverts expectations by introducing the irascible, volatile character of the title, the male equivalent of a Karen and one that, unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately for us?) appears to be based on an actual character the band encountered.
"Keith regales the tale of the psycho tradie neighbour who lived beside us at our old outer-Melbourne sharehouse. Inseparable from his Ute and beloved two-wheeler trailer, Keith would terrorise the streets verbally assaulting anyone who DARED leave their car in the on-street parking out front of his house. From the moment we first played it live, this one has been a fan favourite - no matter who you are or where you come from, EVERYONE knows a Keith." - Liam, Playlunch
Indeed, it’s a move which nearly torpedoed the whole enterprise, as eagle eyed fans might have noticed from the band’s socials…
In typical Playlunch fashion, ‘Keith’ weaves together several concurrent musical threads to create their very own genre – Bogan Funk, finding the sweet spot where tongue in cheek humour meets euphoric electropop, complete with catchy hooks that feature their signature effortlessly sublime sound.
But it’s just the start of the Playlunch takeover. There is, of course, the aforementioned album, but there is also so much more – an accompanying video, starring none other than the iconic AFL Hall of Famer & TV host Barry Hall. Known as much for his aggressive outbursts on the footy field as his talent, Barry ‘Big Bad Baz’ Hall is perfect example of what Playlunch would describe a ‘Keith’. The clip wouldn’t be complete without a re-enactment of ‘Big Bad Baz’s’ infamous punch in 2008.
In their quest to make ‘Keith’ the new slang for a male version of a ‘Karen’ in Australia, the band have set up a 1800 KEITH Hotline, where fans can phone in and relay their own stories in a nationwide search for the biggest Keith! People have already started calling in with their own stories and it’s all kicking off right now, so listen up and do not miss out.
