Take You Out | Brave Daisy
New single ‘Take You Out’ by QLD based ‘Brave Daisy’ follows up their first single ‘Another Man’ released in March.
Take You Out opens with a simple guitar line before changing complexion once the rest of the band joins in.
The drums and bass are quick and push the song along from behind like one of those rotating gate things they use to walk horses, and the track sits unstably, bouncing between two major chords with no feeling of centre. This instability works well at building tension into the chorus, where we get the refrain “I wanna take you out, round downtown”.
The vocalist has a warble and rounds his vowels like Birthday Party-era Nick Cave, and suits the track exceptionally. All the different elements of the track fit together well in a weird, disjointed way.
After the first chorus a conversation between two girls interjects, “this guy’s just asked me on a date at the servo”.
The theme of the song is wanting to ask somebody out, and the awkwardness and hesitation that comes with that is captured perfectly by the song which fits together awkwardly, but works. A unique take on the classic guitar-driven Australian rock song.
A great single by a band I’ll continue to watch.
